at Penn’s beautiful, beloved campus

About Mark
Mark Kocent has served as the University Architect at Penn since July 2018, and as the Principal Planner since January 2004. Leading the Office of the University Architect, Mark collaborates with Penn colleagues and design professionals on all aspects of campus planning; architectural, landscape and graphic design; sustainability; project document archives and community engagement.
Mark managed the creation of the University’s award-winning Penn Connects campus master plan and its subsequent 2.0 and 3.0 updates. This award winning 30-year vision has provided the development framework for the University’s 300-acre West Philadelphia campus with a focus on eastern expansion opportunities along the Schuylkill River, the renewal of the 40th Street corridor and the emerging Pennovation Works business incubator. Under President Gutmann’s leadership from 2004-2021 these plans have produced over 8.6M square feet of new development and 3.5M square feet of renovated space with a total of $6.8B of capital investment in University City.
Mark holds an undergraduate degree in the Design of the Environment and a Masters degree in City Planning and Urban Design from Penn as well as a Bachelor of Architecture from Drexel. His professional experience includes 20 years of architectural and planning practice in Philadelphia, including eight years with Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates.
